People flock to streets after soldiers in Niger announce coup on national TV
NIAMEY, NIGER - JULY 26: People in Niger took to the streets to prevent the coup and called for Bazoum's release on Thursday (July 27).
Soldiers in Niger appeared on national TV late Wednesday (July 26) to announce the ouster of President Bazoum.
Calling themselves the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CLSP), they read a coup statement in a video they shot and broadcast on state television ORTN.
“We are tired of the insecurity that prevails in Tillabéry (western Niger). It is already sufficient. We are for a lasting peace for Niger. We want peace to return. We don't have a preference. May Allah help him bring peace to the country.”
Bazoum was overthrown and the constitution was suspended due to the worsening security situation and socio-economic crisis the country was going through, according to a statement by Col. Major Amadou Abdramane. (Footage by Balima Boureima /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
