Barings Bank: Lord Tugendhat interview; ENGLAND CS Lord Tugendhat, Chmn Abbey National, intvw SOT - for all its history & blue blood & the great sadness that attends its demise Barings was at the end of the day a small private bank/ the Bank of England had to judge whether the collapse of Barings would provoke a crisis/ it has not done so & there is no justification for spending taxpayers money or risking other depositors' money on Barings/ inquiry will have into the question of whether the existing system of controls is adequate/ the controls within Barings will have to be looked at/ it certainly reflects on the British financial system
