GENERAL ELECTION: LABOUR ECONOMIC RECORD:; ITN ENGLAND: London: INT Gordon Brown MP (Chancellor of Exchequer) interviewed SOT - We've gone thru period where we've had Asian crisis, inflationary problems we had to tackle with interest rates, but people now see that standards of living are rising, particularly this year, with new children's tax credit coming in, with £5 and £8 rise in basic pension, with rise in working family's tax credit, rise in national minimum wage / People are beginning to see fruits of building foundations for growth we did in first few years / We had to take tough decisions, got inflation down, lowest for 30 years, lowest long term interest rates for 35 years, mortgages are half what they were under Conservatives, and unemployment has fallen, million more people in jobs - You'll find with new changes coming in this year in particular1.2 million children have now been taken out of poverty, very large number of pensioners are benefitting / For first time we have tax system that can pay people money as well as take it away to fund our public services - Pledges, first we will take million children out of poverty, secondly we will have full employment in this country, thirdly we will give people more educational opportunities, we want majority not just elite getting benefit of university and college system - Moving forward after difficult period of getting private/public projects off ground, getting depts into mode of expanding investment where previously they were cutting it / Nearly 70 hospital developments underway, repaired and modernised 17000 schools, transport programme over next 10 years is 180 billion pounds, big investments in infrastructure including research - Public investment is going to rise as share of income - I'm happy doing job I'm doing CF = B0461297 OR B0461368 20.31.26 TO 20.36.59 MIX PAB = B0460788
