- (asked by reporter what he is 'coming home with') making sure that we don't get a treaty that isn't in our national interests/ there was the option of trying to get a treaty, to have the safeguards I wanted, they weren't available so I had to say no
- the worst thing would be if you had a new treaty without proper safeguards, you'd be distorting the single market that we belong to, the organisations that are meant to police that on our behalf/ we want them to do a better job than they are currently doing in terms of our financial services, but it would have been worse to have a treary within a treaty without the proper safeguards than to do what I did and say no
- it's certainly true that the creation of the Eurozone (Euro zone) has made a huge difference in Europe because there are those countries like Britian, out of the Eurozone and want to stay out of the Euro frankly because it's in our national interest and there countries that are in the Euro that are having a tough time, have got to sort out their currency, who've got a lot of things they need to do including giving up a lot of sovereignty/ we have a decision, if you are going to allow all that to happen within the treaties of the European Union, you want some good safeguards/ we couldn't get them so it is better off that they do it separately
- the fact is, the European Union has rules, it has a court, it has a commission, it has a way of doing things - I sometimes find it very frustrating - but they are not going to be able to use all those things in the way that they would if they were in the European Union
- the court of justice, the European Union belongs to its 27 members/ Britain is a major part of that, a contributor to that including financially/ we have a very strong say/ having them with a treaty inside the European Union that wouldn't have protected o...
