Congressman Clyburn compares pandemic jobless, reemployment rates with Great Recession at House hearing

House Coronavirus Select Investigative Subcommittee Chairman Jim Clyburn says in a prepared statement at an oversight hearing with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin that most recent economic data showed the unemployment rate was over 10 percent at the end of July, higher than the worst month of the Great Recession and its aftermath, as of a month earlier 29 million Americans were receiving or waiting for unemployment benefits, more than ten times higher than the beginning of 2020 showing little sign of returning to normal levels, some jobs lost at the beginning of the pandemic had returned to certain businesses had reopened which was good but the Trump administration claimed the partial rebound meant America was guaranteed V shaped economic recovery returning to full strength quickly but evidence did not bear that out.
