Lisa Nandy MP (Shadow Foreign Secretary) interview via internet SOT

- Terrible and extraordinary scenes - world is watching with real apprehension - will of American people has to be respected - very presidential statement from Joe Biden showing more leadership in the last four hours than we've seen from President Trump in the last four years - outgoing president has to accept responsibility - legacy of a toxic politics of hate and division that we've seen across the world but particularly in the US - pits people against one another, shakes faith in institutions and threatens the foundations of democracy itself
Q: Keir Starmer hasn't directly blamed Trump - you're happy to?
- Absolutely the legacy of this politics that we've seen develop and enter the White House in recent years - even tonight Trump has issued a statement asking people to go home but repeating constantly untruths about the outcome of the election and claiming it was stolen - when allies refuse to stand up for democratic rights of people everywhere - have to stand up against an attack on democracy - need a robust response from the UK government and other governments around the world - other countries will be watching to see whether we stand firm or not - critical the UK stands up and lends its voice to efforts to stop these illegitimate demonstrations and attempts to undermine and attack American democratic rights
Q: What should UK response look like?
- Clear we have to stand up for the rights of the American people - these activists must stop - need to hear a robust response - shows real leadership and clarity - called for calm and law and order - need clear stance from the UK that they stand with the incoming administration - seen a robust response from UK government re. attacks on democracy in Belarus and Russian interference in Belarus in recent months - need ...
