Theodore Roosevelt, twenty-sixth president of the United States. "Speak softly and carry a big stick" was his famous motto that spoke of America as a world power. He was the leader of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry, the Rough Riders, which led him to national hero status. He was responsible for the building of the Panama Canal, oversaw passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act, and built up the Navy and created national parks. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War
