N.S. Savannah Arriving in Savannah
(Original Caption) The N.S. Savannah, the world's first nuclear-powered cargo-passenger ship, arrives at Seattle to begin a series of visits to that city and other leading Pacific ports. The 22,000 ton vessel, a joint project of the Atomic Energy Commission and the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce, will remain at Seattle for an extended stay in connection with the Seattle World's Fair. Present plans call for the ship to leave Seattle October 21 and to arrive at San Francisco October 25 and to leave San Francisco October 31 for arrival at the Los Angeles-Long Beach area Nov. 1. Construction of the vessel was authorized by Congress to demonstrate the feasibility of using nuclear energy to power merchant ships. Members of the general public will be welcomed aboard for a tour of the vessel at each port of call. The Savannah is shown here arriving at Savann
