Bill Moyers Dances The Watusi
President Lyndon B. Johnson's Press Secretary, Bill Moyers, never realized the stir it would raise when he was pictured wildly dancing the frug, or watusi, at a champagne dance---a fundraiser for the John F. Kennedy Center for the performing arts, held at the Smithsonian Institute. The affair was denounced on the House Floor by an enraged Congressman who said the "exhibitionist dancing" by the "mink coat set" should have taken place in a burlesque house rather than the hallowed Smithsonian. The ball's executive committee sent the wife of a State Department official home for a slip when she appeared in a white lace dress revealing a flesh-colored body stocking underneath.
