ENGLAND - AUGUST 06: A photographic portrait of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (1853-1917), taken by W & D Downey. A great character actor and theatre manager, Tree enabled the first production of 'A Woman of No Importance', a new play written by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), in 1895. Following huge box office success, he built His Majesty's Theatre in 1897. Tree also assisted George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), by producing and premiering Pygmalion in 1914. This photograph appears in 'The Cabinet Portrait Gallery' series of celebrity portraits and biographies published in the 1890s. The series includes royalty, actors, academics and authors.
