Immigrants to Australia
A number of Europeans left their homes to start a new life in Australia after the Second World War. These immigrants are among 60 travelling on the assisted passage scheme who have disembarked from the liner Otranto docked at Sydney. From the Immigration Sheds at Sydney they passed to the Bonnegilla Reception Centre near Aldebury, Victoria. Here, amongst other activities, those who can speak no English are given instruction in that language. Finally, a visit was paid to some of the earlier immigrants (many of whom were evicted from the Commonwealth Migrants Hostel for refusing to pay the agreed tariffs) in their tent and caravan camps at Little Bay and Bradfield Park. Some of the settlers have formed Co-operative Building Societies and are building themselves more permanent homes. | Location: Bonnegilla Camp, near Aldebury, Victoria, Australia.
