Ella Fitzgerald, in company with Duke Ellington's aggregatio
UNITED STATES - JULY 05: Ella Fitzgerald, in company with Duke Ellington's aggregation, wows fans at the Newport Jazz Festival. Dubbed the "First Lady of Song," Fitzgerald was one of the most famous and beloved jazz singers of the 20th century. Starting at an amateur contest in Harlem, Fitzgerald's pure voice and elegant style enhanced the lyrics of Ellington, Porter, Berlin and the Gershwins. Her improvisations on a nursey rhyme, "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," became a classic. Fitzgerald, a member of the Grammy Hall of Fame, died at 78 in Beverly Hills.
