AUSTRALIA-ABORIGINAL-ART-DOCUMENTS
Curator John Waight tweeks an Aboriginal bark painting, which doubles as a legal document, spelling out the case for Indigenous sea rights at an exhibition being held at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, 20 August 2002. The 80 works were painted by artists among the Yolngu people of north-east Arnhem Land to express their traditional ties with the region's coastal zone and together map hundreds of kilometres of coastal tract, showing physical and social features throughout the region.
