Kennedy, (shown here in his office), believes that repetition of the "dangerous" racial incidents in Alabama could be avoided if responsible Southerners would "start exercising greater leadership in their communities." He expressed this view in the first exclusive interview he granted since he had dispatched more than 600 Federal Marshals to maintain order in the wake of a mob attack on a racially-mixed group of "Freedom Riders" at Montgomery, Alabama.
