Inventor Frank Whittle Displaying His New Jet Engine
(Original Caption) Air Commodore Frank Whittle explains to members of the press the features of the jet engine which won for him a British Government award of $400,000, tax free. The engine is a model of the prototype jet built by Whittle--the first to fly in Britain. Whittle, now 40, said the unexpectedly large award and the speed with which it was granted came as a "pleasant surprise." The grant was recommended by the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors.
