Merkinch Local Nature Reserve was designated in 2007. Being the only Local Nature Reserve in the Scottish Highlands. The Reserve is in Merkinch, South Kessock and the village of Clachnaharry. Here we see a sand and mud flat known as ‘The Witches Coffin Pool’. At low tide a large object can be seen in the mud that resembles a black coffin. The railway track borders it. In the distance the Kessock Bridge crossing the Moray Firth.
