Australia Aboriginal Tent Embassy marks its 50th anniversary

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - JANUARY 26: Hundreds of people in Sydney gathered on Wednesday, Jan. 26, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy founded by four Aboriginal men in 1972. They were Michael Anderson, Billy Craigie, Bertie Williams and Tony Coorey from Redfern in Sydney. This was in response to the Australian government’s approach to Aboriginal land rights. Today, after half a century, protesters across Australia marched through the streets carrying banners, and Aboriginal flags. They were chanting for the rights of Aborigines. "What do we want? Land rights.” It is part of the longest protest for Indigenous land rights, sovereignty and self-determination in the world. The Aboriginal Embassy has symbolized the effect the policy had on Indigenous Australians. As an Aboriginal activist Gary Foley said, "Aborigines are treated like aliens in their own land. Therefore, they needed an embassy." (Footage by Stringer-AA/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
