Palestinians displaced by Israeli bombardment seek shelter in UNRWA schools

GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - MARCH 22, 2024: Anadolu videoed the displaced Palestinians after their homes were demolished in the bombings, seeking refuge in UNRWA schools and makeshift tent cities in Jabalia on Friday (March 22). The scarcity of food and drink has exacerbated hardships during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, with insufficient humanitarian aid reaching the region. Access to basic necessities like water and food has been severely limited for an extended period, deepening concerns, especially for children. One of the Palestinian women residing in the UNRWA school, Ummu Fuad said that her family was caught off guard by bombings while asleep and being forced to migrate with her children 4 months ago. She mentioned her husband's absence in Gaza's north for the past 4 months, placing all responsibility on herself. Fuad added that this year's Ramadan has been harder than previous years, describing the scarcity of food to the extent that they are resorting to making meals from grass growing on the ground. “If this situation continues for a long time, the summer will come. Then, health issues will increase, diseases will spread, insects, rats, and we will still be in the schools. When will we rebuild our homes? My children are deprived of schools, education, health,” she added. Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by Hamas, which Tel Aviv says killed nearly 1,200 people. The Israeli war on Gaza has pushed 85% of the territory's population into internal displacement amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60% of the enclave's infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN. Israel is accused of genocide at the ICJ. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
