California In Third Consecutive Year Of Drought
INDEPENDENCE, CA - AUGUST 12: In an aerial view, the Owens River is seen upstream of the intake of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which takes water from the river and sends it to Los Angeles, more than 200 miles away, on August 12, 2022 near Independence, California. The entirely gravity-fed Los Angeles Aqueduct, constructed from 1907 to 1913 by self-taught engineer, Willian Mulholland, is considered one of the greatest engineering feats of its time, and led directly to Los Angeles becoming the second largest city in the nation. It also took away water that would have been used for agriculture in the region. The city of Los angeles owns almost all of Owens Valley and allows some grazing but not farming, which would use much of the water. Lawsuits over land rights continue.
