Many say he was the inspiration for the protagonist in Hemingway's classic The Old Man and the Sea. Fuentes, born in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, on July 11, 1897, met Hemingway in 1928 and in the 1930s the writer hired him for USD 250 a month to care for his boat. Fuentes later inherited the Pilar but donated it to the Cuban government. The Pilar is now displayed in Hemingway�s former home, now a museum. Between 1939 and 1960, the American writer and journalist Ernst Hemingway lived for many years in Cuba.
