Information from photo: Gandhi; Mohandas Karamchand, known as Mahatma: (1869-1948) Indian leader, born in Porbandar, Kathiawar. He studied law in London, & in 1893 he have up a Bombay legal practice worth £5000 a year to live on £1 a week in South Africa, where he spent 21 years opposing discriminatory legislation against Indians. In 1914 he returnerd to India. While supporting the British in WW1, he took an increasing interest in the Home Rule movement (swaraj), over which he soon obtained a personal dominance, becoming master of the congress organization. His civil disobedience campaign of 1920 involved violent disorders.
