ME.Debris.4.1029.AS Los Angeles, CA. US Army Corps. bulldozer is clearing some of the heavy brush and palm trees, some possibly 14 16 years old, that have grown thick in the 46 feet of sandy soil that has accumulated in the bottom of the Verdugo Wash where it meets the Los Angeles River. The bottom of the wash is concrete, which alows the corps to remove any debris that could impede water runoff. The Corps is clearing concrete river bottom areas in an effort to clear some of the growth along the river so that it can better accomodate the expected flood waters of the coming ElNino winter. The Friends of the Los Angeles River have expressed concern over the methods used to clear the vegetation. (Photo by Al Seib/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)
