1860: An engraving published by Virtue & Company of New York in 1860 is titled 'Fremont's Party Surprised'. The print, engraved by W. Ridgway, depicts American explorer Kit Carson pointing to an apparition of an old Indian woman as she appears beside a campfire during John C. Fremont's second expedition of the West in 1845.
