Sir Edmund Andros, English colonial governor in America, 17th century (c1880). Andros (1637-1714) served as Governor of the Dominion of New England from 1686 until 1689. His administration of the colony's affairs was unpopular with the largely Puritan populace and after the overthrow of King James II he was forced to leave office after riots broke out in Boston. He was arrested and sent to England for tial after being discovered trying to escape disguised as a woman. The trial never occurred however, and Andros returned to America and served as Governor of Virginia from 1692-1698.
